VIDEO GAMES

… Ian MacLarty has changed that with his newest game simply titled ‘Ned Kelly’. It’s made in his tool Vertex Meadow — with which he also made his parody of ‘The Witness’ — which easily lets you turn any 2D image into 3D terrain that can be explored. By the looks of it, for ‘Ned Kelly’, MacLarty has focused on creating a rendition of the Australian bush as Kelly would have been familiar [although its desert colors seem closer in tone to the outback]. Most striking, however, is that you view this virtual world through a narrow slit. The idea is that you are seeing through Kelly’s eyes as he wanders in his iconic steel armor, now perhaps the most famous asset of the man as it has come to symbolize that of a flawed hero.

Where is that best selling video game featuring Ned Kelly? The immersive, 3D action adventure shooter with surround sound and stunning graphics? It can be done – but it will take a developer and distributor with guts, determination, and a bucket load of cash. In the meantime, we have a few dedicated creators who have touched on the story via pixels and code with various levels of success.

Matt Sophos, director of ‘Lost Planet 3’ [2013] and story lead on ‘God Of War’ [2020], at one stage showed a great interest in developing a Ned Kelly based adventure. Unfortunately, most high-end action-adventure video games cost upwards of USD$300 a minute to produce before you factor in manufacturing, distribution, and marketing.

The Action Force training camp is under siege from a giant Cobra Combat Machine built by the evil Baron Ironblood. As the Cobra looms over the camp the Action Force Recruits run to shelter from its vaporising venom and piercing laser beams. Man your positions! Defend the camp! Use missile attack canons and atomic powered energy shields to fight the deadly Cobra. Work together in a two-player game against the computer controlled Cobra – 8 hits to the eyes and pow! – the Cobra is destroyed. Or one player can control the Cobra in a head to head battle! In a three-player game two players defend the camp while the third is the Cobra. Will the Cobra trump or can Action Force destroy Baron Ironblood’s evil machine? In the two-player competitive and three player games, use paddles and a joystick.

The Australian legend of Ned Kelly and the famous tale of its end, the last stand at Glenrowan, has been re-created on this CD-ROM. Glenrowan’s town, people and historical events have been rebuilt as a virtual environment. A story-mode movie is played with narration depicting the critical events during the last stand. The program is real-time and interactive, which means players can change the camera angle while the story plays a change of close-ups and action from afar, allowing players to see through the eyes of the police or even through Ned himself! An explore mode also allows players to control Ned Kelly, tour the town as it was, and talk to the town folk as if it were 1880 again!

Ray’s preferred weapons were revolvers and shotguns, making him especially deadly in close quarter combat. He preferred to dual wield pistols, even during his time in the Confederate Army. Ray adopted a breastplate of armour which helped protect him against enemy fire. The wrap around protection was similar in design to Ned Kelly’s but was adorned with a large crucifix as an acknowledgement to his preacher days. Ray also wore a minister cloak under his signature armour while his minister collar could be seen peeking above his cuirass.

Buckets is a very enigmatic man, with a red coat, brown long sleeve shirt, red wristbands, and a paint can over his head with one eye hole. He seems to have very high skills with pistols and a history with gambling. So little is known about him that not even his bio can make heads or tails of what his deal is, merely being filled with questions instead of answers. His bio mentions his most hated thing is security and comfort, so it’s likely he actively seeks out life threatening activities to satisfy himself, hence why he’s looming over the Russian Roulette building- one of the most dangerous games you could partake in. In other words, Buckets is a thrill seeker and a gambling addict to the highest degree. During the Avanti Savoia! campaign players assume the role of Luca Cocchiola. Donning heavy body armour Luca spearheads the assault on key Austro-Hungarian positions, capturing strongpoints, destroying an artillery gun, and thwarting an enemy aerial assault. The armour’s design was inspired by the Kelly Gang.

When Ned Kelly walked unharmed before the Victorian police rifles in his own hand-made armour he was an object-lesson to the world. If an outlaw could do it, why not a soldier? … [Kelly in his armour is] an object lesson to the world … The use of armour is possible for the protection of the vital parts of a soldier’s body, and ought to be supplied to stormers, whose business is to cross ‘no man’s land’, attack the machine-gunners, and clear the way for the infantry.

One of these concepts featured a mask [Stick ‘Em Up] which reminded me of an iconic Australian outlaw name Ned Kelly. This is how I got the idea of making a fully-armoured Ned Kelly skin for Erron Black. Those who take down the armour wearer will earn points and be able to claim the outfit as their own, with players then earning points for kills while donning the Kelly Gang inspired costume.

It can’t be a coincidence that the golden armor looks exactly like the armor worn by the Australian outlaw Ned Kelly when he and his gang ambushed a police train in 1880. They designed their armor to stand up in a police shootout, but Ned ended up taking several bullet wounds to his exposed hands and legs. Though he survived the shootout in his homemade armor, Kelly was hung a few months after. The armor—and a thinly veiled Kelly Gang—has already appeared in ‘Red Dead Online’, but now you’ll have the chance to don a golden version for yourself.

It’s not Australian in obvious ways, but it turns dead outlaw Ned Kelly into a supernatural enforcer in shorts and a Collingwood scarf who menaces a cafe, and expects you to realise that’s funny. If a New York show wants me to know bodegas and Tompkins Square Park, a Melbourne game can get away with referencing Collingwood.

Remnant: From the Ashes is set in a post-apocalyptic world where it has been thrown into chaos by an ancient evil from another dimension which is now overrun by monstrous creatures. As one of the last remnants of humanity, you’ll set out alone or alongside up to two other players to face down hordes of deadly enemies and epic bosses, and try to carve a foothold, rebuild, and then retake what was lost. Remnant: From the Ashes is a third-person action-adventure shooter RPG developed by Gunfire Games and published by Perfect World. The game is optimized for both single and multiplayer and was released for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Microsoft Windows on August 20, 2019.

Drifter’s Set is an Armor Set in Remnant: From the Ashes. Drifter’s Set has an armour skill that provides unique passive abilities (all sets add buffs and effects to various stats). The Drifter’s Overcoat and Trousers can be found at Founder’s Hideout behind the shelf beside the Root corpse hanging on the wall. The Drifter’s Mask can be found dropped on Earth at a random location.

I’m surprised nobody pointed out how this set looks like Ned Kelly armor.

NED: Iron Outlaw

Ned: Iron Outlaw is a 2D Metroidvania platformer based on Ned Kelly – Australia’s most infamous outlaw. Run and gun through endless swarms of enemies, wielding standard shooters alongside some truly original (and crazy) weapons; explore a twisted take on true events starring real life Aussie legends; And decide the fate of the tangled bush, with playing style determining Ned’s choice between hero and outlaw. Between 1877-1880, The Kelly Gang evaded police and captivated the public with daring robberies and bold statements calling out harassment and inequality the working class were experiencing. We take up the story at the final showdown, and put our own spin on what transpired next…
